Newcomers to The Islands Of The Bahamas quickly realize that they have encountered not one but many destinations. Between the "poles" of Grand Bahamas and Great Inagua are 23 inhabited islands and thousands of unpopulated islets and cays (pronounced "keys"). Cosmopolitan Nassau, a once ruled by pirates, seems a world away from the desert nature reserve Inagua. In many of the islands, tiny villages seem lifted from the coast of Massachusetts and left palm trees and pines and iridescent sands. These beautiful islands lie only 50 miles off the Florida coast – far closer than any other destination in the Caribbean.
The Bahamas has been promoted as a destination for U.S. high society, and many of them are Americanized. However, there are still opportunities its 700 islands and cays 2500 to disappear into a mangrove forest, explore a coral reef and escape the high rise hotels and the madness of tour packages.
Originally a port base named Charles Town, Nassau is today against the Bahamas, visited by most everyone who comes down this way, at least not for his service as a transportation hub. Although some parts dirty enough has been preserved historical flavor to make such a stop here worthwhile. Much of this atmosphere comes from its development during the so-called loyal since 1787 until 1834, when many of the finest colonial buildings in the city were built. Prior to this buildup, Nassau had largely been a haven for pirates, privateers and wreckers, as it is in a key shipping routes between Europe and the West Indies.

Visit the main islands of the beautiful island of Grand Bahamas (Freeport / Lucaya) and bustling New Providence (Nassau and Paradise Island). Or, if you really want away from the crowds, visit one of the many islands like Abaco, Andros, Acklins and Crooked Island, Bimini, Berry Islands, Cat Island, Eleuthera, Exuma, Inagua, Mayaguana, Long Island and San Salvador.
Throughout more than 700 islands that make up the Bahamas, residents tend to comply with "island time" an affectionate term used to describe the Bahamians relaxed "behavior and its slow way of life. It is very difficult to fall into this habit: many of the islands are uninhabited or sparsely populated, and the beautiful shell-filled beaches houses painted in soft pastel shades, serenity is easy to find.
Time
Temperatures of the Bahamas are moderated by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream. And because the Bahamas are closer to America continental North – and thus made it easier for North American cold air systems – they are slightly cooler than other Caribbean islands. Temperatures means in the Bahamas range from 80 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit (27 to 32 degrees Celsius) in summer 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit (21 to 27 degrees Celsius) in winter. The Bahamas extends 760 miles off the coast of Florida in the near northwest of Haiti in the south-east. The group consists of 700 islands, of which 30 are inhabited, and about 2,400 cays (coral reefs). When Christopher Columbus arrived in 1492 in San Salvador, the islands of the Bahamas were inhabited by Lucayan, a subgroup of the Arawak Indians. Difficulties slavery, disease and other whole tribe wiped out in 25 years since the arrival of Columbus.
