Christmas Vacation – Island Style
Each year, millions of people who decide to spend Christmas and New Year in another state, country or continent. For those wishing to escape to the south, sunny, but still relatively close to home, a holiday in the Bahamas is a great alternative. Of the seven hundred islands that make up the Bahamas, Elbow Cay, a small island in the Abacos, is a wonderful place to celebrate the holidays with friends and family.
Christmas and New Year is one of a kind in Elbow Cay. The ads all over the world the first thing during the holidays is the beacon of Hope city, located in north-central part of the island. The lighthouse has thousands of lights hanging from its platform observation to its base. Each night, the lighthouse is lit, while the lights shine at night. Many of the houses and restaurants are also preparing for the holidays with lights and decorations – even though it seems a bit strange, without any white winter snow.
The holiday season also brings many events as the annual Christmas musical at the local church. The local children rehearse for months in the work and the many songs you have to learn. Tickets are free, but are limited, and donations are encouraged. The donations are then delivered to an orphanage in Nassau. There is also a golf cart parade that runs through the village. Like most of the people in golf carts to the island instead of cars, decorated with ribbons, lights, shells, and anything you can imagine. Similar to golf cart parade, a parade of boats cruise the waters around the islands, and display your lights and decorations for all to see.
New Year, however, is another story. All the islands of Abaco have their own version of a fireworks show, but Elbow Cay has two! A few nights later this year, a local company, puts on a spectacular display fireworks over the water between two islands. The best place to watch the show is in the southernmost beach of the island. At low tide, you can even sit on the islands sand that form in shallow water. On New Year's Eve, all the local bars are open, and dinners and special events. This is the only night the year in which a cargo cover is in force. This is the place until midnight, because once the clock strikes midnight, flooding all the streets to see the second fireworks display. The fireworks can be seen from anywhere in the city, although a favorite spot for viewing is from the deck of a ship in port. Once the screen is completed, Junkanoo begins. Junkanoo, similar to Carnival, is a cultural event in the Bahamas, which consist of many native-costumed dancers paraded through the streets while dancing to drums and whistles of the band. Everyone joins in and dances through the streets, while following the parade through town.
After years of traditional festivals at home, spending Christmas in the Bahamas is something everyone should experience. Celebrating the season in the Caribbean islands is priceless.
