I'm looking to go on vacation to the Bahamas or the like. Which is generally cheaper to book through? Something like cheaptickets.com or a travel agency near my home?
Discount web are usually cheaper, but usually non-refundable. For more options on cancellations, requests for room, etc, go with an agent. I've used both Expedia and an agent in the past. If you are sure you will not be canceled all go to the website! (I prefer itravel2000 Expedia and Canada). Remember, the main road can get in trouble with Expedia and similar websites is that if you to change plans, because they are non-refundable. Otherwise, you can save big!
