Haiti! A Prime Al Quida Recruiting Centre or “A Ticking Time Bomb” in the making!

Haiti! Seven (7) months later!

Having considered the status of the Haitian relief and rebuilding effort, seven months after the massive earthquake of January 12th we cannot help but think, that by not moving faster with the pace of the recovery effort; we are in effect creating a “ticking time bomb” for all of us who form part of the  western  hemisphere of nations!

The devil finds work for idle “minds, hands and feet”!

There is an old saying that “the devil finds work for idle hands” this can be enlarged to mean “idle minds and feet” also!  When the implication of this phrase is weighed against the millions of frustrated, disillusioned and idle Haitians with no visible means of employment, we will get a picture of the state of hopelessness and helplessness that they feel; which is the perfect setting for the breeding of thoughts of rebelliousness and in extension the creation of a rogue nation!

The appalling conditions under which over 1.6 million displaced persons live!

When we think that over 1.6 million persons are living in tent cities, with the scarcity of food supplies, almost no clean water for drinking, taking a bath or washing clothing or utensils; little or no proper sanitary conveniences for relieving themselves, shortage of medical facilities to treat the sick and a continued shortage of basic medical supplies; the seat of Governmental Authority lying in ruin, the country’s infrastructure in shambles and no proper security for the people!

The sight of so many groups of marauding armed thugs going about robbing and terrifying the already impoverished and destitute people living in these temporary camps! The thought that if you escaped the robbers; you may not be able to escape those employed by the rich and affluent! Their sole duty is to chase the less fortunate and vulnerable members of their own society away from the only place they now have to call home; in the process destroying their tents and the few possessions they have been able to salvage in the aftermath of the quake! All this, while the nations and people of the world who are in a position to help sit on their hands seemingly thinking that if they wait long enough this problem will go away over time!

Political maneuvers slow the arrival of the “Billions of dollars” pledged for relief efforts!

While we are not naïve enough to think that the billions of dollars pledged to the relief and rebuilding efforts, should flow into the country unregulated and without proper checks and balance along with a viable and achievable recovery plan! It is of paramount importance that this happens and does so at a much faster pace than is happening presently! Why? For these are desperate times facing a desperate and frightened set of people, who truly believes that the rest of the world has abandoned them and couldn’t care less whether they live or die! As such they cannot see nor do they understand the reason for the continued political maneuvers by the powers that be, when they are living in squalor, starving and dying for want of the basic necessities of life!

“Desperate situation calls for desperate measures”!

Does anyone really care is the question everyone is asking! Now, if the answer is yes? Then what we need is a practical and pragmatic demonstration of this care; in order that these people can take faith or have hope in our pronouncements! Someone once said that “desperate situations, calls for desperate measures”! So, how much more desperate should their situation get before we begin to treat it as a priority! We have often been told that “a drowning man catches at a straw” in fact a drowning man in his panic will cause even the person trying to save him to drown, as he tries desperately to save his own life. Are we going to wait until the plight of our Haitian brothers and sisters get to this stage before we act?

A lucrative and viable recruiting ground for Al Quida!

It is very important to remind the powers that be that, what Haiti now represents is” a lucrative and viable recruiting ground for Al Quida” seeing as how these are the similar situations and conditions that they have been exploiting in parts of Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan and other parts of Asia and Africa! What “pray tell” should prevent them from doing the same in Haiti? In fact they must be eying the crisis and resulting, ineptitude with glee, realizing that for the first time they have a prime recruiting base and opportunity in the west, with millions of downtrodden, oppressed and impoverished people, just waiting for the type of solution and ideology that they seek to propagate! This I believe would be a tremendous embarrassment to the United States, Al Quida’s sworn enemy and greatest prosecutor! However, let not the other countries such as Canada, brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Panama, the Bahamas, along with those closely connected to the United Kingdom such as Cayman, Barbados, British virgin islands and Bermuda as well as the other Caribbean nations, think for one minute that they would or could escape the wrath and destructive capabilities of this plague called Al Quida!

Unprecedented access; Unobstructed view or reach to the shores of the United States!

Importantly, if Al Quida gets a foothold in Haiti, they would have unprecedented access as well as an almost unobstructed view and or reach via land, sea and air to the shores of the United States and all of the countries in north and South America as well as the rest of the Caribbean! It stands to reason therefore, that such an unprecedented access would allow for them to strike at selected targets at will! It is of paramount importance for us to note that, the impact and effect on world trade and the economies supported by the trade carried on in these places would not be lost on these people! As such hitting landmarks and places essential to trading and tourism such as the panama canal, the Jamaican transshipment port, Cayman as a financial centre, Bahamas as a massive tourist Mecca along with all the other vulnerable targets that this access offer, would therefore become their top priority! In fact to coin a common phrase “Al Quida would have a field day” with these poorly defended targets!

The total disruption and destruction of our known way of life!

The result of this action would be the total disruption and destruction of our known way of life, as we know it in the western hemisphere! That is a worrying thought! But, a worse scenario when we consider the possibility of the United States feeling so threatened and vulnerable to these attacks that they decide to attack Haiti in order to root out the Al Quida elements there! This would certainly result in further tightening of their already “very tight” border control security measures! Essentially sealing themselves off from the people of the Caribbean, South America and parts of North America!

By so doing, they would have dealt a catastrophic and crushing blow to the economic well being of these nations, plunging the entire region into economic and social chaos and turmoil! It is not farfetched either to think, that other countries such as the United Kingdom and Canada would follow America’s lead, by taking whatever steps they may deem necessary to protect themselves, further imprisoning the people of this region! Making it even easier for Al Quida to function within our borders and region as they would be a lot more suffering persons willing to do almost anything to survive!

Affix that one stitch to Haiti now; rather than attempting to apply the nine stitches later!

The question therefore is, which is easier, less risky and more achievable at this time; fixing the problems in Haiti now or trying to do it after Al Quida has gained a foothold and begin to use it to their strategic advantage; thereby changing how we all live in this region forever? There is an old adage which says “a stitch in time saves nine”! As such, the powers that be should seek to make it their priority to act with haste in their efforts to restore Haiti as a functioning member of this hemisphere of nations and its people as productive citizens of this region, with a real hope of making a better life for their families and themselves! Every attempt must now be made by all the governments and people around the world, with a vested interest in the stability of this region to affix that one stitch to Haiti now; rather than waiting to apply the nine stitches later!
