Does my child need a passport for a cruise?
In August we are going on a Carnival cruise to the Bahamas with a group of family members. I was told no need for a passport, is it true? Should I get a case? Also, my son is only 7 years old, has no good and because it has no form of identification I feel I know you get one, but it will be a big deal, because my ex husband lives in another state. I have to send the documents to obtain notarized stating that I can get a passport without him being present. All minors obtaining passports must have both parents with them in person unless a notarized authorization. I am also concerned time. If wasting hundreds of dollars to get a passport, can not be here in time! Help! What would you do?
No passport is needed for this cruise by anyone. Please read below. U.S. citizens on cruises that begin and end in the same U.S. port and travel destinations in Mexico Canada, the Caribbean, the Bahamas or Bermuda are able to re-enter the U.S. with proof of citizenship other than passport or passport. Acceptable proof of citizenship includes an original or certified copy of your birth certificate and photo ID issued by the government (such as a driver's license). Passports are required for cruise starting at a U.S. port and end in another. Children under 16 who are U.S. citizens or Canada are exempt from passport requirement land border crossings and sea. In lieu of a passport, children are able to use a birth certificate as proof of citizenship to enter the U.S. by land or sea. Children entering or re-enter the U.S. by air must have a valid passport.
